Shayna got a fever Tuesday morning (that made us cancel our trip to the north) followed by a sparse, full-body rash that afternoon. The fever went down a little by Wednesday but the rash was spreading so after nap time we went to see a doctor.
Schneider Childrens Hopsital is 25 minutes from us, is a quality facility, and was our best bet for getting to see a doctor who can evaluate the situation properly. Israel has a lovely national health care system so the emergency room is not crowded with the uninsured, is a nice place for actual emergencies, and is staffed by quality professionals (unlike the crazy ignorance we've encountered in the states). (Shayna had the best IV insertion I've ever seen.) The rash and fever we now know are probably (cultures pending) from a common virus in the enterovirus family. It probably made it's presence know because Shayna is immunosuppressed but since it could be masking other (bacterial) infections we're doing a round of iv antibiotics. Nahum is currently back at the hospital this morning (we're 7hrs ahead of EST) for a 2nd round of labs and the 2nd round of antibiotics. (I'm at home with Elijah.)
We went AMA last night (and are of course very proud of it). They wanted to admit her for observation in the off chance there was some sort of bacterial infection AND the antibiotics administered weren't doing anything. This means pour sleep for Shayna with the night-time prodding and no sleep for Nahum because of something that is highly improbable. With the hospital so close and sleep so essential for recovery (and good descision making), we took her home. What they were worried about in the night didn't happen. Shayna only had a slight fever this morning and the rash is starting to go down.
With the virus resolving, we'll probably still be Pittsburgh bound when we get home since Shayna's liver numbers are worse than they were the week we left for Israel. We're supposed to get into Roanoke Sunday morning.
